Fingerless Mitts with Startup Library: Knitting

Note: I paid for the yearly subscription/kit (not sponsored) - but this post does contain affiliate links to Bluprint) / Craftsy

I've restarted knitting...yay!!!! I learned to knit about 15 years ago, but then switched to sewing. I'm so excited to knit again. Don't worry- my sewing isn't going anywhere...it's my true crafty love :).

I wanted a portable hobby while I'm watching the kids at swim lessons or basketball practice - so back to yarn crafts! I signed up for the Bluprint /Craftsy- Starter Library Class and LOVE it! I also got the kit too - no longer available.  The videos and instructions are fabulous and cover EVERY SINGLE step!

I just finished the first project - Fingerless Mitts  and love them!!! I still need to block them, but was too excited to share! Plus I can't decide on which scent of Soak Wash - do you have a favorite????

I actually chose to sign up for the Craftsy Yearly Subscription so I could watch ALL the classes, plus choose 12 classes for my forever library - including this Startup Library - Knitting class so the subscription is a GREAT deal! Plus there are sooooo many different classes and it's less than Netflix or Hulu!!!

Woodland Wander Layered Cake Quilt

Hello! After I finished my Woodland Wander Chain of Stars Quilt, I just had to sew another quilt with Woodland Wander Fabric by Clothworks - it's seriously the cutest fabric of woodland critters! The Woodland Wander Collection includes this adorable panel - so it's perfect for my Layered Cake Pattern (on sale for $5).

I love sewing my Layered Cake Quilt Pattern - it's quick and shows off the gorgeous fabric prints! Since the blocks are off set - there are no seams to match! Plus it also uses all (42) 10" squares.

Threadology Quilt Along - Block Two

Happy February 15th! It's time for Block Two - Nine Patch for the Threadology Quilt Along with Fat Quarter Shop and Moda Fabrics! Over $10,000 in donations have already been raised for Make-A-Wish Central/South Texas....quilters are so generous!!!! I love this!!!!

I'm so excited about this month's block - the Nine Patch. I love sewing nine patch blocks...okay - I love all patchwork especially with Little Snippets by Bonnie & Camille - which is available here!

Let's get sewing Block 2: Nine Patch

This week we are making (1) 12.5" x 12.5" block and (4) 6.5" x 6.5" blocks - they are so adorable!

Tip 1: Take the time to cut your fabrics straight - especially #55184-11, 55187-12, and 55183-16. You will be so much happier with straight cuts that match the printed fabric pattern.

Tip 2: Use the Creative Grids 2.5" square ruler to fussy cut the small Nine Patch Blocks!

A Bit About the 2019 Threadology Patterns -

The Threadology patterns are FREE to download! We ask for a donation of $5 to our Make-A-Wish Central & South Texas campaign each time you download our patterns.

Island Cabins Pillow / Mini Quilt - Maxie Mail January Box

I love the January Maxie Mail Box!!!! The little 4" Log Cabin blocks are just so fun to sew and soooo CUTE! Maxie included the Creative Grids Log Cabin Ruler so you will have perfect blocks and seams...yay!

Be sure to watch Maxie's Member's video for helpful hints and full tutorial on sewing your Island Cabins Project! I always watch the video first before I start. Then I re-watch the video again while I am sewing the project and pause it until I've reached the next step. I find Maxie's videos soooooo helpful!

Let's chat more about the January Maxie Mail Box-

I was so excited when I saw the gorgeous Art Gallery Fabrics and the Creative Grids Ruler as I love log cabin blocks! Don't worry if this your first time sewing log cabin blocks or assembling blocks on point --- Maxie makes it easy!

What's included:

  • 100% Pima Cotton Fabrics* by Art Gallery Fabrics for quilt top and binding, from designers Barij and Sew Caroline
  • Creative Grids© Log Cabin Trim Tool
  • Gutermann cotton thread, color 1040
  • Island Cabins Pattern. PLUS full video tutorial by Maxie!
  • Tea
Let's start sewing!

First - watch Maxie's video so you know how to use your Log Cabin Ruler. It's so easy AND accurate! Then start sewing those cute little 4" blocks!

PS - Those cute scissors are from my Maxie Mail Box in December! I love useful tools!

I thought it would be fun to sew my blocks in a different layout from the pattern - so flip your blocks around and see what layout you like best! You can totally make it yours! Tip - take a picture of each option with your phone and then decide on your favorite layout.

I chose straight-line quilting that looks like it bursts out of the center of each block - it's so fun and it matches this geometric project!

Sooooo.....you may have noticed that I omitted the outer border. I did this so my project could be a pillow and fit perfectly in a 18" pillow insert. I like the Hobbs Pillow forms - here or here.

Bonus Starling Pillow with AGF Color Master -Vibrant Violet Box

Hello! I'm excited to share my "bonus pillow" made from all SCRAPS from my Starling Quilt! I love being able to sew a matching pillow to my quilt! Plus this pillow is made only from the left over fabric...whoo hoo!!!

In case you forgot - here is what my Starling Quilt looks like - blog post here

My Quilt Ingredients -I made larger borders and scrappy backing!

Ready to start sewing your matching pillow 18" x 18"

  1. Don't toss those left over triangles while cutting/piecing the Single Half-Square Triangle Blocks (top of page 2 of pattern) AND  Left Corner Unit (bottom of page 2 of pattern) AND Double Corner Unit (top of page 3 of pattern) AND Right Corner Unit (bottom of page 4 of pattern). You will have (24) background triangles and (24) print triangles. Sew together (1) background triangle to (1) print triangle to make (1) half-square triangle. Repeat until you have (24) half-square triangles.
  2. Cut (6) 4.5" squares from background fabric - you should have extra fabric after cutting for original quilt. Cut in half on the diagonal to create (12) triangles.
  3. Cut (6) 4.5" squares from print fabric. Cut in half on the diagonal to create (12) triangles.
  4.  Sew together  (From Step 2 and 3) - (1) background triangle to (1) print triangle to make (1) half-square triangle.
  5. You should now have (36) half -square triangles.
  6. Trim to 3.5" squares. I used this Bloc-loc ruler - it makes it soooo easy.
  7. Layout blocks in desired  6 x 6 layout and sew together. I chose to randomly flip my all different directions randomly.

 8. Quilt pillow top as desired. I chose straight-line quilting with Aurifil Lavender Thread.
9.  With remaining fabric from fat quarters - make pillow backing with preferred method. I like using zippers - I buy these ones at Amazon and trim to size needed!

10. Enjoy your pillow!!!

Have a great day and happy sewing!
