Back in Black: A Crazy 8 Quilt Kit

I'm excited to share a warm and so very cuddly quilt - The Back in Black: A Crazy 8 Quilt Kit.  This quilt is 100% Shannon Cuddle fabric and is sooooooo soft!  

 

Back in Black: A Crazy 8 Quilt  58" x 68"

As this was my first time making a 100% Cuddle Quilt, I wanted to use a kit.  I chose the Back in Black: A Crazy 8 Quilt Kit from Missouri Star Quilt Company. I highly recommend the quilt kit because all the Cuddle fabric is included to make the quilt top and binding. Just choose a 2 yard cut of Cuddle for the backing (Cuddle is 58-60" wide)  The kit includes (8) 10" x WOF Cuddle Fabric so minimal cutting is required for this quilt.  PS - no batting is needed as the pattern includes a clever quilt as you go assembly.

• 2 yards of Cuddle Backing: Luxe Cuddle: Hawke Alloy
• Polyester Thread: Glide 40wt Sterling
• 90/14 needle
• Pins (sturdy ones as you will be pinning through 3 layers of cuddle)
• Wonder Clips

Cuddle Tips:

Cutting:

• Keep a vacuum nearby. 
• Place each cut piece in the dryer with no heat for a few minutes to remove loose fibers. Don't forget to clean the dryer vent after.

Sewing:

• Use a walking or even/dual feed foot. 
• Polyster thread:  I love Glide 40wt 
• 90/14 needle
• Increase stitch length. I used 3.0 
• Use a 1/2" seam allowance
• Use sturdy pins 

It may be summer time, but this easy quilt can be made in a day and ready for when fall and winter arrives!

Camp S'more Pillow Fun

Hi Friends!  Today is all about pillows using the fabulous new collection: Camp S'mores by Hershey with Riley Blake Designs. S'mores and sewing is the most perfect combination of happiness! 

Pillow Party Time 

Ready to chat about pillows. Sewing pillow cases and decor pillows are my favorite projects because they can be finished in an afternoon and are an affordable project - yay! Plus the pillowcase pattern is a free pattern by Riley Blake Designsand the Reversible Zipper Pillow is a free tutorial on my blog.

My daughter is so excited for our matching Camp S'mores pillowcases for our next Girl Scout camp out! This project is super quick to make and will definitely bring sweet dreams.

Roll Up Pillow Case 

Supplies for one pillow

• Roll Up Pillow Case free pattern - here
• 3/4 yard Main Fabric: Camp S'mores Main Green
• 1/4 yard Cuff Fabric (9" x WOF) : Camp S'mores Text Marshmallow or Chocolate
• 2.25" x WOF Trim Fabric: Lori Holt Shabby Fabric Leaf

Tips:

• Pattern step 4. I did not finish the raw edge of the seam with a zig-zag or overcast stitch because this seam will be hidden.
• Pattern step 7b. I recommend making the French seam option to avoid exposed seams

Camp S'mores Panel

I love panels! If a fabric collection has an included panel, I always need it plus Riley Blake Designs panels are such fantastic quality. I use panels for an easy quilt or quilt backing or bags or decor pillows ... so many options! The Camp S'mores Panel is sooooo perfect for decor pillows. 

Reversible Zipper Pillows 16" x 16" 

To make my Decor Pillows - I used my free tutorial: Reversible Zipper Pillow on my A Bit of Scrap Stuff Blog (here). 

I made a few changes to my tutorial to make it a bit quicker since I was using all four squares on the panel. 

• ONLY trim off the Hershey plaid top and bottom of panel.
• Make a quilt sandwich - Panel plus batting plus backing fabric. My backing is Lori Holt Bee Ginghams Jennifer Alpine - this will be hidden inside pillow, but I still wanted mine to be cute.
• Machine quilt as desired. I chose a meander free motion design.
• Cut each square to 16.5" x 16.5" 
• Start at Step 2 of my Reversible Zipper Pillow Tutorial (here)
• Camp S'mores Reversible Zipper Pillow will finish at 16" x 16" (instead of 18" x 18" as noted in blog tutorial)

I chose to make two pillows that are reversible! Of course, you can easily make four pillows - just choose a coordinating print from Camp S'mores for the reverse side!

Hi Quilty friends! It's almost time for Christmas in July so today I’m sharing the In the Fields Quilt, a free pattern, featuring The Magic of Christmas fabric collection designed by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake Designs. This brand new Christmas collection is so happy and festive! 

The Magic of Christmas Fabric + Patchwork = Classic Christmas Quilt! 

Patchwork Quilts are a favorite of mine for decor, to use, and make! Sewing together 5" squares of Christmas fabrics makes me so happy - just add a Christmas movie or music and you can be festive in the summer too! PS - Patchwork quilts are perfect for beginner quilters too!

The Magic of Christmas: In the Fields Quilt

• 1/2 yard Binding: The Magic of Christmas designed by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake Designs
• 4 yards Backing Fabric OR keep on reading for my scrappy backing : The Magic of Christmas designed by Lori Whitlock for Riley Blake Designs

I chose to arrange my (208) 5" squares into 13 columns and 16 rows with a color gradient of .... white low volume, red, green, then black mixed with dark green. I absolutely love it! 

The In the Fields Quilt uses (208) 5" squares so you can use 5" Stackers for a quick, no-cut method OR you can cut 5" squares from a bundle or yardage (this is what I did). 

Options for easily cutting 5" Squares:

• Use your AccuQuilt GO! Cutting System to perfectly cut 5" squares
• Creative Grids Stripology Ruler 

I love a striped binding and The Magic of Christmas striped print has the stripe printed on the bias, which makes me extra happy. 

Originally, I planned to make a different quilt pattern with The Magic of Christmas Collection  so I ordered my favorite Jar Print in red for a border. But when the fabric arrived, I changed plans and made the In the Fields Patchwork Quilt and used my border print and left over fabric to make my quilt reversible. I love a double-sided quilt!

Firework Fizz Quilt : Simply Country

Hi Quilty friends!  Today I’m sharing my Firework Fizz Quilt featuring the Simply Country Collection designed by Tasha Noel for Riley Blake Designs.  Here's a peek of this lovely new collection....

Firework Fizz Quilt Pattern

Simply Country is the sweetest collection of blue and white prints designed by Tasha Noel. I absolutely looooove all the shades of blue! Plus the prints are fabulous! The collection also includes a coordinating panel, which can be used as a quilt or I used the panel on my backing for a reversible quilt!

Firework Fizz Quilt 67" x 67"

Supplies:

• Firework Fizz Quilt Pattern - Pattern Shop or Etsy
• (9) Fat Quarters - Simply Country designed by Tasha Noel
• 2.5 yards Background OR I used (4) 0.75 yard cuts of the low volume prints of Simply Country designed by Tasha Noel
• (1) yard Outer Border OR I used 1/4 yard cut for top border and 1/2 yard cut for side borders and 1/4 yard cut for bottom border from Simply Country designed by Tasha Noel
• 4.25 yards of Backing Fabric OR I used the Simply Country Panel plus added extra yardage for 6" border plus the backing fabric

I love the secondary pattern that is created once you sew together all nine blocks! Such a fun surprise! 

Of course Tasha included the most perfect navy stripe print ... which is a must for the binding!

You may have noticed the Firework Fizz Quilt uses half-square triangles to create the blocks. 

My favorite tips for creating perfect half-square triangles:

*Tip 1 – Make the half-square triangle block a bit larger and trim to size. I love the Bloc-Loc half-square triangle ruler for this method.

OR

*Tip 2 – Use the desired size of AccuQuilt GO! half-square triangle die. THIS is my favorite method as it is so quick, accurate, and no trimming needed!

 

I LOVE creating quilts that are double sided ... it's so much fun! Using the Simply Country Panel made it super easy! I did trim the printed borders off the panel since I trimmed the panel to a square size since my finished quilt is a square shape. I just added borders around the panel until my quilt backing was the correct size - so easy!

A few pattern changes I made .... 

• Scrappy background using the Simply Country low volume prints. This was a happy accident. I didn't have enough of one fabric for the background so I decided to mix and match the low volume prints through out the quilt and I LOVE it!
• Scrappy border. I wanted to match the ombre color placement of the quilt with the border too. I used the same pattern print ... just in three shades of blue.
