Perfectly Pieced: Drunkard's Path Pillow

 A Bit of Scrap Stuff Blog #ABitofScrapStuff #MEtimedelivered #kimberbelldesigns

The Perfectly Pieced Drunkard's Path Pillow was so fun to make even if I put it in "time out" for a bit and didn't realize a rotated block oopsie until too late! My project is just extra personalized now :)!  I'll share how I made my unique design - keep on reading.

I receive the Perfectly Pieced Doorstep Subscription Box - which is AMAZING! Each month I receive digital files (for machine embroidery) to create 2", 4", 6", 8" quilt blocks, bonus project instructions, and quilting files PLUS coordinating fabrics and thread plus a bonus.   I am always so excited when the coral box arrives in my mail box!  You can subscribe to Perfectly Pieced (here) or  purchase past digital files and fabric bundles plus embroidery supplies at the ME Time Delivered Shop (here).

Tips to avoid the oopsies I made:

  • Cover up cutting direction sizes that you do NOT need.  I like to use washi tape or post-it notes to cover up the sizes that I don't need. Then I can easily remove either product and reveal all the cutting size options.  When I was making the Drunkard's Path blocks, I was feeling over confident and cut all (16) blocks out, but instead of 4" blocks - I cut out 2" blocks ....ack!!!! I didn't use my own tip?!?!?  My project sat in "time out" while I was thinking what do.
  • Double check all of your blocks are rotated the correct/desired direction BEFORE you quilt and finish the project. Do you spy the block that is rotated incorrectly?
  • If making 2" blocks - I recommend quilting each block BEFORE assembling the project. The 2" blocks have bulky seams so if you want to use the quilting designs without breaking a needle - quilt them first.

Drunkard's Path Pillow: Melanie's version
  • (16) 2" finished Drunkard's Path Blocks
  • (8) 4" finished Drunkard's Path Blocks
  • (4) 4.5" x 4.5" squares
I followed a very similar version of the included 4" pillow design. That is the center design of my pillow, but with 2" blocks. Don't forget to make sure all of your blocks are rotated the correct direction (unlike mine ...oops). The (16) 2" blocks create a 8.5" x 8.5" unfinished square. I created a border that mimicked the center design  using  4.5" unfinished squares and drunkard's path blocks - creating a 16.5" x 16.5" project. As I love a 18" pillow, I added 1.5" unfinished border strips as noted in the pattern.

Machine Quilting
99.9% of the time I love to use the included Perfectly Pieced quilting files, but I changed the machine quilting design for this project.   This block is a bit bulky, especially in 2" size.  I was worried about doing all over quilting with Clear Blue Tiles as I would likely break a needle if the design went over a bulky seam.  So I did straight-line machine quilting through the block centers to avoid all the bulky seams. I actually really love this straight line quilting so it all worked out well!

I love love love this project with my special design :).  Making pillows is a favorite project for me as they are much quicker than a full quilt and are great for decorating!
