I received the new AccuQuilt Mariner's Compass Die and made this awesome pillow! I LOVED making this project! Piecing this block was so fun! It looks complicated - but it isn't! Keep reading for tips!
I love this brand new die!
The traditional Mariner's Compass Block is a tricky block to cut out and sew, but with the AccuQuilt Mariner's Compass Die it is so much EASIER! Using the die - the block pieces are cut quickly and accurately. Plus the notches on the fabric (see photo above) allow you to match up the pieces perfectly for easy piecing.
The Mariner's Compass block is pieced together (no y-seams) and the center circle is finished with appliqué. Finished block size is 12" x 12".
I wanted to make my project monochromatic - but the Mariner's Compass Block would also looks amazing if you used scrappy fabrics too! I think that will be my next one!
Mariner's Compass Pillow 18" x 18"
Supplies:
Sewing Tips:
- Use pins! Pins will help you have perfect points! I like Magic Pins.
- Label each cut piece of fabric with Alphabitties or post-it notes
- The Mariner's Compass Die includes easy to follow piecing instructions with illustrations- make sure your cut shape is the facing the correct direction (example straight sides line up and notches line up).
- To create an 18" pillow - I simply cut 3.5" borders (solid black) and attached them to the 12" Mariner's Compass Block
For machine quilting - I chose to free motion stipple. I love the random curves in the quilting as it contrasts nicely from the symmetrical sharp points of the block! Of course- I added a zipper backing so the pillow cover can easily be washed.
When I was taking photos - my daughter thought I needed an unicorn as a prop for my blog photos! Love her! She's my future quilter!
You will LOVE it!
Have a great day and happy quilting!
Melanie
