Meadow Lane Half-Hexagon Pillows - mini tutorial

A Bit of Scrap Stuff Blog #ABitofScrapStuff #RileyBlakeDesigns #FreeQuiltPattern #Tutorial #QuiltedPillow #HexagonPillow

Hi Quilty Friends! I decided I needed some new pillows when I saw the Meadow Lane Collection designed for Sara Davies for Riley Blake Designs. I love the muted colors and floral prints... so pretty!

Keep on reading for a mini tutorial!

I LOVE hexagon projects, but I'm definitely NOT a fan of y-seams ... so the half-hexagon is perfect!!! It is much easier to sew and looks awesome!

I used my AccuQuilt Half-Hexagon Die 2&1/2" side die (PS - this die also cut 1" and 1&1/2" half-hexagons too!). Using my AccuQuilt, I was able to cut the half-hexagon shapes so quickly and perfectly! PS - The trimmed off points makes it SO MUCH EASIER to sew half-hexagons together!

Don't worry - if you don't have an AccuQuilt, you can cut half-hexagons with a Hex N More Ruler OR ask for an AccuQuilt for Christmas ;)

Mini Tutorial for Half-Hexagon Pillows

Makes (1) Pillow 18" x 18"

Supplies:

  • (30) 5" squares - Meadow Lane designed by Sara Davies for Riley Blake Designs
  • 2/3 yard fabric for pillow backing -- Meadow Lane designed by Sara Davies for Riley Blake Designs
  • 2/3 yard fabric for pillow interior lining *Used to cover batting for pillow front. You will only see this fabric when you look inside the pillow.
  • AccuQuilt Half-Hexagon 1", 1&1/2", and 2&1/2" Die OR Hex N More Ruler
  • Scrap batting
Cutting:
  • From (1) 5" square. Cut (2) 2&1/2" side half-hexagons. Total of 60.
Assembly:
  • Arrange half-hexagons in desired layout as shown below.

  • Sew 1 row together with 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat until all 10 have rows have been sewn together.

  • Sew rows together in numerical order. Don't worry about edges sticking out - you will square up the project after quilting.
  • Make Pillow (Quilt) sandwich. Half-hexagon pillow top (right side up - top) then batting (middle) then Interior Pillow Lining (right side down - bottom)
  • Quilt as desired. I chose free motion meandering - my fave!
  • Trim Pillow Top to 18.5" x 18.5"
  • Make pillow backing with favorite technique. I love using an exposed zipper for a pop of color.
  • Sew Pillow Top to Pillow Backing and enjoy your new pillow!

I had so much fun making the multi-color Meadow Lane Half-Hexagon Pillow that I made another with only the neutral fabrics from the collection. LOVE it!

Do you have a favorite??? Multi color or Neutral???? I think it is a tie ;) and I LOVE how they look together!

Meadow Lane will be shipping to your favorite quilt shop in a just a few weeks!!! What will you make with it????
