Hi Quilty Friends! Today is about cooking and quilting with a retro twist. I received the new Cook Book Collection designed by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs and LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  The prints are so fun and may remind you of your mom and/or grandma! Plus look at all the low volume prints in this collection!

It was hard for me to decide which quilt pattern I wanted to sew as Cook Book Collection is fabulous for so many patterns. I actually changed my mind when I received the fabric and chose to make Chain of Stars Quilt because it's the perfect pattern to use lots of prints including the low volume prints included in the collection!

The Chain of Stars Quilt pattern is perfect for creating a vintage vibe with the Cook Book collection as it reminds me of a quilt that our grandmothers would have quilted.

OPTIONAL Outer Border Instructions
The original Chain of Stars Quilt doesn't have a border, but adding an outer border is super easy!
  • Choose one yard of your favorite print - mine is: Cook Book Cayenne Floral
  • Cut (7) 4" x WOF strips
  • Sew strips together to form one very long narrow strip
  • Measure quilt length. Example Quilt Length of 63.5"*. Cut (2) outer border strips 4" x 63.5"*. Sew (1) outer border strip to right side of quilt and (1) outer border strip to left side of quilt.
  • Measure quilt width. Example Quilt Width of 61"*. Cut (2) outer border strips 4" x 61"*. Sew (1) outer border stripe to top of quilt and (1) outer border strip to bottom of quilt.
* Cut your border strips to the measured length and width of your quilt.

I didn't plan on using scrappy low volume prints for the quilt background, but I didn't order enough of the Cook Book Cloud Cherry Turn Over fabric since I was originally going to make a different quilt. But this inspired me to be creative and to realize I could use all the scrappy low volume prints in Cook Book for the background for the Uneven Nine Patch blocks and I LOVE it!!! Plus by using the Cook Book low volume prints instead of one solid fabric - it reminds me of our grandmothers using fabric scraps when quilting instead of a coordinating fabric collection.

Chain of Stars is a fabulous quilt for beginners as the stars are No Point Matching Stars, which means the points float in the background fabric so you don't have to match up the points when sewing blocks together - it's so much easier and your stars always have points!

Chain of Stars is a block based quilt pattern - you can easily adjust the quilt size by making more or less blocks! Or add an outer for a quick option to enlarge your quilt - like I did!

  1. You picked the perfect pattern, Melanie! Love how this turned out - and using the low-volume as background fabric along the way, was a great idea. The beautiful fabrics really shine in this quilt.

  2. Is it possible to make it bigger? I'm wanting like a king size

    1. It is a block based pattern - so you can easily make more blocks plus add a larger border if desired.
