Punched Out Star Pillow - Maxie Mail Subscription Box

The Punched Out Star Pillow was so fun to make! The Stars are pieced with Square in Square Blocks...WHAT?...it was magic sewing! I loved how Maxie taught me a new method of piecing Stars!!! Don't worry - Maxie has included a "how-to" video plus pattern with the September Maxie Mail Box

Let's chat more about the September Maxie Mail Box-

EVERYTHING is included in your Maxie Mail Box to sew your Punched Out Pillow!
  • Art Gallery Fabrics for pillow top AND backing
  • Batting
  • Muslin
  • Pattern with coordinating video
  • Frixion Marker
  • Creative Grids Ruler
  • Thread
  • Tea
What we learn this month
  • Cindy Williams's method of making Stars from square-in-a-square blocks.
  • How to make an envelope pillow backing.

Sewing the Stars were so quick this month...even if I made a cutting oops. That is why you should always measure twice and not be watching This is Us ;) when cutting fabric!

I love straight-line quilting and usually reserve it for smaller projects as it takes quite a bit of time and thread - but I love the look! I used the included thread in our box this month - it's a perfect match!

Enchanted Stars Quilt with AGF Trinkets Fusion - NEW PATTERN

I was so excited when Art Gallery Fabrics asked me to design a quilt for their upcoming Trinkets Fusion Look Book (here). We decided that my Enchanted Stars Quilt would be perfect for featuring the fabric collection Trinkets Fusion. The fabrics are absolutely gorgeous and the colors are perfect for fall! Plus the fabrics feel so soft -- I love the quality of Art Gallery Fabrics!

I designed the fat quarter friendly quilt pattern - Enchanted Stars for Trinkets Fusion collection! Since I love the fabric patterns, I wanted to use large blocks so the fabrics could really shine!

Enchanted Stars is a great beginner pattern to learn to sew flying geese! Flying geese are fun and useful blocks to learn to sew! They are used in so many patterns! Don't worry---it isn't too many flying geese blocks, but just enough to learn them well!

These flying geese help build the star blocks....I always love a quilt with stars!

I loved sewing and quilting my Enchanted Stars Quilt! Big block quilts always come together so quickly...yay for fast quilts!

Simple Zipper Bag --- Project Remix

It's Throw-Back Thursday--- so I'm sewing along with the Fat Quarter Shop Project Remix. We are sewing the Simple Zipper Bag! I always LOVE a zipper bag --- so of course I needed two! Plus patchwork was a must for my bags.

Supplies:
(1) Mini Charm Pack - Smitten by Bonnie & Camille
1/2 yard for binding
1/2 yard for backing and interior
Soft & Stable
Handbag Zipper

I altered the pattern just a bit--- I sewed patchwork for the entire front of my bag. I just love patchwork! Plus I could use more of those cute 2.5" mini charm squares...no fabric waste/left overs here!

One Mini Charm Pack gives you enough 2.5" squares to make both bags! So I separated out my squares into bright florals and low-volume. I LOVE both of the bags!

Harry & Alice Preppy Quilt

My friend, Amanda Herring's, latest fabric collection is now available --- Harry & Alice!!! I was so lucky to receive some early release fabric... it is absolutely gorgeous!!! The colors are so rich and those roses ---love!

I chose to sew the Preppy Quilt from A Bright Corner (which is a free pattern). To make a larger lap size quilt...I just sewed more blocks!  Plus the Navy Swiss Dots matches perfectly with Harry & Alice fabric!

I always love love love Amanda's fabric collections! I didn't think it was possible for her to top her Hello Lovely collection....but I think she did with Harry & Alice! I just love navy! Plus the roses are my absolute fave....I can't decide if I love the larger or smaller roses the most!

Tony Danza Mini Quilt - Maxie Mail Subscription Box

Foundation Paper Piecing....do you LOVE it??? I love the precise points and angles that foundation paper piecing provides, but would often get frustrated as I would sew my fabric incorrectly and unpicking those tiny stitches is no fun. So I was so excited see that my August Maxie Mail Box contained Tony Danza Mini Quilt by My Crowded Nest along with Maxie's awesome instructional video. This pattern and video has made me fall in love with foundation paper piecing! I can't wait for my next foundation paper piecing project!!!

Let's chat more about the August Maxie Mail Box...

What Maxie included in the August Maxie Mail Subscription Box

  • Gathered fabrics for your quilt top and binding, by Bonnie Christine for Art Gallery Fabrics. Sooooo gorgeous!!!!I love it!!!
  • Tony Danza Paper Piecing Templates - Soooo helpful!
  • Tony Danza Block Papers, printed on Carol Doak's foundation paper
  • 6" x 8" Olfa Cutting Mat
  • Add-a-Quarter Ruler for Paper Piecing
  • Thread
  • Tea
What you will learn:
  • Paper Piecing with templates, producing no-waste and easy fabric placement
  • Easy method for cutting multiple fabric layers with the supplied templates
  • Using the Add-a-Quarter Ruler
  • Precise Paper Piecing techniques

Plus an AWESOME "how to" videoI highly recommend watching the video completely before starting your project. Maxie and Sarah (My Crowded Nest) show you each step and makes it easy to understand!

After I was watched Maxie's video- I was so excited to try this paper pieced pattern. I made the first light section completely. The first block took a bit of time as I would start and stop the video for each step as I sewed along, but once I "got it". I was able to sew them so much faster by sewing all the blocks piece 1 then 2 then 3 then 4.

I love the sharp points...plus it was sooooo easy to sew...thanks to the templates! I have not used templates when paper piecing before and now I will only choose patterns that include them- why- it makes it sooooo easy to line up your fabric and no fabric waste (seriously tiny bit of trimming). I highly recommend Sarah's (My Crowded Nest) Tony Danza Mini Quilt Pattern.

The pattern has you sew 20 total blocks (20 light and 20 dark) to make a 16" x 20" Mini Quilt. Just look at the gorgeous Gathered Fabric by Bonnie Christine for Art Gallery Fabrics!!!

Jelly Roll Race to the Finish Line Quilt Pattern with Fort Worth Fabric Studio

Are you ready for National Jelly Roll day on September 15th???  No worries as Fort Fabric Studio has everything you need to be ready to sew your jelly roll quilt!

We wanted a fun to sew pattern that uses a jelly roll....so we made a few changes to the original Jelly Roll Race Pattern by cutting the jelly roll strips in half and sewing the strips together with straight seams! Now we have Jelly Roll Race to the Finish Line Quilt Pattern...plus it is a free quilt pattern at Fort Worth Fabric Studio!!!

We couldn't resist making another quilt with Badda Bing fabric...it is so happy and gorgeous! I just love the cherries, floral, and gingham!!!

You will need to purchase backing separately:  3.5 yards (44" wide) or 1.875 yards (108" wide).
Suggested backing:  Badda Bing Dots of Cherries White

The Cheerful Check (gingham) binding looks perfect with the Cherries backing fabric...so happy!

Star Break Quilt with Fort Worth Fabric Studio

I'm excited to share my latest quilt pattern design- Star Break! I love sewing patterns that allow the fabrics to stand out- no tiny pieces in this quilt. Badda Bing by Me and My Sisters Design is too cute to cut up small!  Plus these stars are no-point stars...yes...no need to match up the points or loose them!

The best part is that Star Break is a free pattern at Fort Worth Fabric Studio AND Kits are available here at Fort Worth Fabric Studio! Seriously - these fabrics are even more fabulous in person!

Finished size: 54.5" X 63.5"
Included in the kit:
  • Badda Bing Layer Cake
  • Moda's Bella White for the star block background
  • Binding fabric Moda's Badda Bing Mini Petals in Red (Moda 22344-11)
  • Star Break Quilt Pattern by Melanie Call (me)
You will need to purchase backing separately:  3.5 yards (44" wide) or 1.875 yards (108" wide).

Since I LOVE every single fabric in the Badda Bing Fabric Collection...Star Break Quilt Pattern uses every single 10" Layer Cake Square. No left over layer cake squares to collect dust in the scrap bin...yay!

You can easily sew this quilt together while the kiddos are in school or over a weekend! It is a relaxing quilt kit that allows you to just enjoy sewing and creating a quilt...my favorite kind! In fact- I even designed the stars to be "no matching points". This gives perfect stars every time - hooray!

This is the binding fabric included in the kit too...love!

The Star Break Badda Bing Quilt Kit does not contain backing fabric...so I recommend this one-   Badda Bing Everything Cherry in Red!

I decided to free motion quilt swirls and flowers on my quilt...which took forever and sooooo much thread! I can't wait to wash it and enjoy all the crinkle-loveliness!

Be sure to purchase your Star Break Quilt Kit with Badda Bing at Fort Worth Fabric Studio - HERE.  The free Star Break Quilt pattern- HERE. Sewing this quilt was so relaxing and just made me happy! I love fabric that just makes me feel happy...cherries- flowers- and gingham!
